…from duplicate content and black hat tricks.  UKGimp offers 6 Simple Ways to Protect Your Website, an article on some techie tricks that help ensure your site won’t be doing anything to anger the search engine gods.  Some of these tips and tricks are more technical than others.  Most of us know you need to use htaccess to make sure only the “www” or non-”www” version of your site is getting indexed.  Personally, I didn’t realize that some hosts configure their servers to return 200 errors instead of 404 errors, which can cause problems.

Check out the article for more good stuff.

What makes a super affiliate?

Super Affiliate Marketing Blog wrote an interesting article which suggests that self-proclaimed super affiliates probably aren’t actually super affiliates.  The name of the blog adds a touch of irony… but the article goes on to point out that anyone can be a super affiliate.  And the real point is that you shouldn’t assume a self-proclaimed [...]

Search engines don’t penalize paid links

There’s been a lot of talk around the web about the search engines not valuing or even penalizing for paid links from services like ReviewMe or PayPerPost.  According to SEOMoz, that’s just not true.

There’s been a lot of talk around the web about the search engines not valuing or even penalizing for paid links from services like ReviewMe or PayPerPost.  According to SEOMoz, that’s just not true.

Tim answered first and said that Yahoo! wouldn’t try to pick one post out of twenty or fifty on every blog that might be running advertorials or paid reviews just to stop link value from that particular post. If the engine looked at the site and saw that in general, the outgoing links were of high quality, there would be no discount of link value for paid blog material.

The rules for paid links are the same as for any other kind: they should be relevant, they should come from quality sites, etc.  The fact that money changed hands doesn’t mean the link doesn’t qualify in every other way, and the fact that money didn’t change hands doesn’t make the link good.

When you think about it, this really just makes sense.

Why one-page affiliate sites suck

InsureMe has a nice article about why affiliate sites benefit from having a lot of good landing pages.  We all want to build something quick, make it perfect, then walk away and wait for the money to roll in.  That’s fine, and sometimes it works.  But with a little more work, you can build something [...]

InsureMe has a nice article about why affiliate sites benefit from having a lot of good landing pages.  We all want to build something quick, make it perfect, then walk away and wait for the money to roll in.  That’s fine, and sometimes it works.  But with a little more work, you can build something that works a lot better.

People want to go straight from Google to the very item they were searching for.  They can’t do it if they just land on your homepage.  You assume they’ll look for the product on your homepage?  Maybe, maybe not.  And you should rank better for each individual product you have a separate landing page for.

Also, you’re decreasing the number of clicks between a visitor’s arrival and purchase point.  This is always good.

And every landing page gives you a chance to create some more unique content, so you won’t just have yet another affiliate site like most of the others.

Dupe Content explained

Duplicate content is a plague for webmasters.  Scrapers parrot our own content right back at us, and years ago they used to sometimes rank higher than we did!  Webmasters have a ton of questions about this stuff.  SEOMoz has done a good job laying it all out in this rather amusingly illustrated guide to dupe content.

Key points:

  • Google puts what it believes to be the “dupe” content into supplemental pages so it won’t rank as high as the original.
  • What if a scraper is stealing your content?  As long as they’re ranking below you, don’t worry - it’s just not worth it.  But if you’re new and/or they’re a powerful site, this could squeeze you out.  Fortunately, you have some options: “One option is to file a DMCA infringement request with Google, with Yahoo!, and with MSN. The other is to file legal suit (or threaten such) against the website in question.”
  • Having some duplicate content shouldn’t hurt your domain.  If you have a lot of it, however, you may want to consider putting meta tags on the dupe pages to keep robots from following.  That way, you avoid potential penalties.

It may cover nothing you don’t already know, but it’s still a good, straightforward checklist about what’s out there, the pros and cons of each method, and some companies to help you get there.
