Slightly deceptive but very clever way to get your site indexed and monetized quickly

Digfield has a very clever suggestion for a way to get a new site rolling and earning. Basically, you place a Craig’s list ad looking for writers for your site. This gets people clicking to look at your site. Then when they email for more information, you send them a form email thanking them for [...]

Digfield has a very clever suggestion for a way to get a new site rolling and earning. Basically, you place a Craig’s list ad looking for writers for your site. This gets people clicking to look at your site. Then when they email for more information, you send them a form email thanking them for their interest and put a link to an affiliate product in it. You could just stick it in the signature so it’s on every outbound mail, or you could so what he suggests and actually pitch it to them.

I say "slightly deceptive" because you’re probably not really looking for contributors. ;)

SEOMoz’s page strength tool

If you’re trying to learn new ways to look at your site’s viability - other than Pagerank - check out SEOMoz’s page strength tool. It tracks some pretty interesting metrics - as usual, any of these can be "meh" on their own, but if you put them together you can hardly avoid getting a clear [...]

It tracks some pretty interesting metrics - as usual, any of these can be "meh" on their own, but if you put them together you can hardly avoid getting a clear picture of where your site stands.

I’m going to use this tool on all my sites every month or so for a while. It should help me spot some trends and things I can work on.

Excellent New Site Promotion List

This is practically a step by step way to promote your new sites. I mean, it’s like a recipe it’s so simple. And of course you can vary it using sources you find on your own. But seriously - brilliant.
I’m so definitely going to do this with some of my new sites.

Why ReviewMe isn’t taking off

I read a very detailed and thoughtful article about Brian Turner’s experience with ReviewMe - as an advertiser, not a publisher.
If I try to sum up what he said, I’ll probably accidentally misrepresent, so let me just say what impressions I retained from reading it.

If the advertiser puts in some work - i.e., giving people a specific bit of linkbait to review, like a contest or something - it can be good. But for simple hands-free site promotion, advertisers can get better inbounds for less through other methods like buying links.

I wonder how this compares with PayPerPost, the setup of which really encourages advertisers to think about what they want bloggers to cover and steer them in a direction. PPP is generally much cheaper, too.

When good Google goes bad

Google loves your site.  It’s indexed 8 billion pages and they’re all #1.  And then suddenly, they’re not.  What do you do?  Try every method of SEO you’ve heard of to bring it back?  Throw off your white had in a tizzy and start spamming?  Or just hang in there and wait for the algorithms [...]

The “right” answer varies from one site to the next.  You can’t always be sure what Google’s objecting to.  Making changes could even make things worse.

Before you try anything drastic, there’s a thread at Webmaster World on what to do when you take a Google nosedive.  A lot of visitors have listed their own methods - what worked, what didn’t work.  Not only will it give you some good ideas for the nosedive situation… there are some damn good linkbuilding suggestions for anytime in there. ;)
