CSS dropdown menus across the header in WordPress

I found a plugin today that very easily lets you create a horizontal drop down menu in the header of your WordPress template, with links to all your archives, categories, blogrolls and meta. It works very well just out of the box, but it’s pretty customizable, too. If you want to get that stuff out of your sidebar and have it look good, too, it’s a great option.

It would be nice if you could customize the titles - the only options I found were either “Blogroll” or having the first item in the list be the title. UPDATE: my mistake. You can customize the titles:

Yup, you can customize the titles.
In the menu options, under each individual menu is a text field called “Title”. Change the value and presto! new title LOL

Invisible theme tinkering with Preview Theme plugin

Young Go Getter has a great step by step tutorial for solving this problem:

You’ve got a new plugin you’d like try. Or maybe you’d like to play with your header image. Or maybe you want to see how that colour would look. That doesn’t sound too hard. But there’s one problem. Any changes you apply to your blog will be seen by your readers.

The Preview Theme plugin lets you be the only one to see the changes. Get the full instructions over at YGG.

Get a Craigslist Wordpress theme

Technosailor has offered a Craig’s List style Wordpress theme for download. Very small, very fast, very SEO.
Check ThemeVibes for the latest Wordpress and other CMS themes around the web, complete with a demo. I’m definitely seeing stuff there that I don’t see on Wordpress’ own theme viewer.

Spiffy looking RSS widget

Check out AMWSO for a really attention-grabbing graphic widget that shows RSS feeds in a scrollbox. It’s designed for only certain blogging and social bookmarking engines (Blogger, MySpace, etc.), so it’s a great way to show off your other blog on one of those.

People can click on the individual post title. And the scroll bar works, but other than that, clicking anywhere on the window takes you over to the other blog.

Wordpress needs to release changed file upgrade zips

Am I the only one who gets booted off the server repeatedly when I try to make Wordpress upgrades? And yes, it happens on more than one host, so while my hosts may not be perfect I think this is more a matter of Wordpress installs containing about 8 million files.

I often end up having to upload tiny little folder by tiny little folder sometimes, just so I can keep track of what’s actually been uploaded and what hasn’t.

Would it be that difficult for them to release a changed file zip, even just for the very last upgrade, so that if you keep up with them you can always just change the latest files?

I know there’s a list of changed files somewhere, but separating those out from a list is painful. I have a feeling there’s an easier way they could go about it from their end.

If you run several types of Wordpress blogs, here’s a helpful tip for saving time launching new ones. Make a folder for each type of site and store it on your hard drive. Keep the essential plugins for that type in the folder so you can quickly upload them all. Toss in a Notepad or Word document which explains what each plugin is for and notes what you need to do to get it running - i.e. template php calls or settings from within the plugin’s admin panel. This way you can pretty much start a new Wordpress site half-conscious when, if you’re like me, the best new site ideas tend to come to you.
