Make your taskbar transparent
Lifehacker’s Download of the Day is actually two apps, one for Mac and one for Windows. Both have the effect of making your taskbar or menubar transparent until you run your mouse over them. It doesn’t really free up screen real estate, since application windows refuse to expand below the taskbar area, but if you find the taskbar distracting, these apps could help you stay more focused.
